JEEP WHITE AMERICAN SONGWRITER
Hatfield Heritage
I grew up in the hills of West Virginia, raised on stories of the Hatfield McCoy Feud. Some of those stories were told first hand by my grandfather, Allen Hatfield who was the son of Valentine "Judge Wall" Hatfield, the older brother of "Devil Anse" Anderson Hatfield. My grandfather was a young boy during the later years of the feud, and he remembered well many of the events that took place.
As a child, I lived on my grandfather's small farm located on Beech Creek W.Va. He also ran a small grocery store which was somewhat like today's convenience stores. He had a single hand pumped gasoline pump that I was always ready and willing to operate for the customers. He sold kerosene from a small tank in the store to people that had kerosene lamps and no electricity. He had cigarettes, tobacco, canned goods, milk, bread and soft drinks.
The store was a gathering place for folks to share news, trade various articles, pass general gossip and tell stories. The feud was hashed over and many a lively discussion of the events both fact and fiction took place. Papaw Allen was a musician and he never missed a chance to play his banjo and sing if the opportunity presented itself. Grandpa's store was then, and still is today, my most favorite place in the whole world.
